Everything we love is changing.
The people around us change.
Our bodies change.
Places change.
Relationships change.
Seasons pass.
Children grow.
Years move faster than we expect.
Even the person we were yesterday is not exactly the person we are today.
We know this.
And yet, somewhere inside us, we still wish certain things could remain exactly as they are.
We Hold Tighter When We Fear Losing
Sometimes the knowledge that something may not last makes us afraid to love it completely.
We protect ourselves.
We keep a little distance.
We hesitate to become too attached because somewhere in the back of our minds is the understanding that life eventually changes everything.
But protecting ourselves from loss can also protect us from experiencing life fully.
There is another possibility.
Love anyway.
Impermanence Doesn't Make Love Meaningless
A beautiful moment doesn't lose its meaning because it ends.
A friendship wasn't meaningless because life eventually carried two people in different directions.
A season of life wasn't wasted because another season replaced it.
Love doesn't need permanence to be real.
Sometimes what matters most is simply that it happened at all.
That two lives crossed paths.
That someone made us laugh.
That someone stood beside us when we needed them.
That for one small stretch of this enormous journey, we shared the road.
Love Leaves Something Behind
People sometimes leave our lives while their influence remains.
A phrase they used.
Something they taught us.
A kindness we never forgot.
A way they made us feel when we needed encouragement.
We carry pieces of one another forward.
Perhaps that is one of the quiet mysteries of love:
The moment passes, but something of it remains.
Don't Wait for the Perfect Moment
We often imagine there will be more time.
Another conversation.
Another visit.
Another walk.
Another opportunity to say what we mean.
Usually there is.
Until one day there isn't.
That isn't a reason to live fearfully.
It's a reason to live presently.
Say thank you.
Say I'm proud of you.
Forgive when you can.
Put down the phone.
Stay a little longer.
Listen more closely.
Tell people what they mean to you while they are here to hear it.
Nothing Stays. Love Anyway.
Life doesn't promise permanence.
It offers moments.
And perhaps our task isn't to make those moments last forever.
Perhaps our task is simply to be fully there while they are happening.
To love without demanding forever.
To appreciate without possessing.
To hold gently rather than tightly.
And when life inevitably changes, to be grateful that something beautiful was ours to experience at all.
Because knowing that something cannot stay doesn't make it less worthy of love.
It makes loving it now even more important.
Nothing Stays. Love Anyway.
